What is Building Energy Modeling?

IBPSA-USA defines building energy modeling as: The study and application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software-based building energy models; that is, the application of energy modeling techniques and practices to building design, construction, operations, measurement and verification for new, existing, alterations, and additions buildings as well as hypothetical typical and prototypical buildings.
